Iziko Winter School 28 June – 30
July 2008
Iziko Museums’ Winter School
Programme runs from 28 June until 30 July and includes
colloquiums, film screenings, Bo-Kaap walkabouts, beading and
palaeontological workshops, and a discussion on xenophobia.
Starting off proceedings on Saturday, 28 June from 10:00–14:30 at
the Iziko South African Museum,
is a colloquium on architecture and social responsibility. Heinrich
Wolff, winner of the DaimlerChrysler Award for Architecture 2007,
chairs the event which includes an address by Minister Richard
Dyantyi, MEC for Local Government and Housing on ‘The role of local
government in preserving architecture and housing in the Western
Cape’. Other presenters are Prof Lucien Le Grange from UCT, Prof
Iain Low of UCT, Andrew Boraine, CEO of the Cape Town Partnership
and Jane Visser of Visser Thomas Architects. The topics to be
discussed range from architecture as a tool for social
transformation, to re-imagining the city beyond 2010.
On Saturday, 5 July from 10:00–14:30 at
Iziko South African Museum, the
topic of the colloquium is “Slavery’. Speakers include Dr Bheki
Mngomezulu of CPUT, Dr Antonia Malan of UCT, Prof Rob Shell of UWC,
Dr Yvette Abrahams, Patric Tariq Mellett and Zenzile Khoisan. Topics
addressed include ‘Slavery and the colonial aftermath’ and ‘Gender
and slavery’. Finally the question is posed: ‘Where to from here?’
Entry to both events is R30 for adults and R10 for students.
There will be a film screening of ‘Love, Communism, Revolution and
Rivonia: Bram Fischer’s Story’ on 3 July at 13:00, and a screening
of ‘Bram Fischer Remembered’ at 17:30 on the same day. Both events
are free and take place at the Iziko
South African Museum.
The Bo-Kaap walkabouts takes place on Saturday 12 and 19 July from
09:00–12:00 and cost R120, including lunch.
The African Bead Workshop runs on Saturday, 12 July and continues on
19 July from 10:00–15:00 at the Iziko South African Museum. This
2-day workshop, which costs R200, is extremely popular and early
booking is essential.
A workshop for school learners on ‘Interpreting Palaeo-environments
from the Fossil Record’ runs on Wednesday, 23 July from 10:00–15:00
at Iziko South African Museum. Entry is free and again, early
booking is essential.
The programme ends on Wednesday, 30 July at 17:30, and addresses the
explosive topic of xenophobia. Entitled ‘Love thy Neighbour’, the
discussion, chaired by columnist Terry Bell, questions whether South
Africa is ‘progressing, redressing or transgressing’. Entry is free.
