26/06/2008 Forty Years of Friendship: The Friends of the SA National Gallery 1968–2008

The Friends of the South African National Gallery (FONG) mark their 40th anniversary with this celebratory exhibition of selected works of art presented to the Gallery’s collections over the past four decades. On view from 21 June until 28 September, the exhibition emphasises exciting,
newly-acquired works of contemporary South African art being shown for the very first time, while also revealing the quietly supportive role played by the FONG in building a broad and representative collection for the nation over an extensive period. Without this loyal and proactive
support, our collecting activities would have been greatly impoverished.

As an organisation, the Friends of the South African National Gallery has grown in stature, and has links with other Friends’ organisations worldwide through their membership of the World Federation of Friends of Museums. Aside from their funding of acquisitions, they continue to
support art education programmes for adults and children, assist curators with funds for travel and research, and fund purchases for the Iziko SANG library.

The relationship between the Friends and the Iziko South African National Gallery is essentially a mutually beneficial one; each enriching the other through a process of giving and receiving. Preferential access to openings, lectures, special studio tours and a wide range of activities, is
made possible to the individual or corporate member for what is, in effect, a very small membership fee.

Join the Friends and become a part of our world. Application forms indicating details of individual, private and corporate memberships are available at the Gallery’s reception desk or from Lizzie O’Hanlon at sangfriends@iziko.org.za.

The Gallery is open daily from 10:00-17:00, except Mondays. Enquiries 021 467 4660.
