Friends of South
African Museum plan weekend to Riebeek Wes
Lovers of local history can look
forward to a wonderful weekend from 16-17 August 2008 when the
Friends of the South African Museum
host a lively getaway to Riebeek Wes and the surrounding area.
Steeped in important history, it was here that Jan Smuts was born,
whilst nearby is the famous Victorian railway village of
Matjiesfontein, one-time home of Olive Schreiner and the setting for
stories by Rudyard Kipling and Percival Gibbon. Vineyards,
wheatfields and orchards abound.
The ‘Anglo-Boer History Weekend’ begins at the Smuts Museum outside
Riebeek Wes, followed by lunch at Riebeek Kasteel (named after Jan
van Riebeeck). The itinerary also includes visits to Matjiesfontein,
Ceres, Touws River and the Cape Rebels Monument in Paarl, which
commemorates the Cape Afrikaners’ struggle for freedom during the
Anglo Boer War.
Led by education and development consultant, Michael Rice, the tour
costs R960 for members and R1150 for guests. This includes lavish
meals, overnight accommodation in Matjiesfontein and an informative,
post-prandial talk by Mr Rice on Saturday evening. The cost excludes
transport to and from Riebeek Wes.
Numbers are limited and early booking is essential.
