04/07/2008 Songs of the Veld

On Tuesday, 29 July at 19:00 at the Iziko South African Museum, Marthinus van Bart, Cape Town-based journalist and editor-in-chief of the Anglo-Boer War centenary publication Vir Vryheid en vir Reg, will discuss Songs of the Veld and other poems. A rare publication, Songs of the Veld is an anthology of poems by accomplished 19th century poets, including C. Louis Leipoldt. Thanks to the efforts of Van Bart, this literary gem has been resurrected and will appear on Cape bookshelves in time for Women’s Day on 9 August.

The fascinating, but tragic story behind the anthology began during the Anglo-Boer War, when a gifted band of Cape intellectuals compiled the anthology as a means of alerting the world to atrocities committed by the British in their concentration camps. Secreted to Britain, the anthology was published and read worldwide, but was immediately banned in South Africa. Until now, it has never been published in the country that inspired it.

Hosted by the Friends of the South African Museum, the event is free for Friends and R20 for guests. Come early and enjoy a glass of sherry with Friends.
