22/07/2008 Art walkabout at the Old Townhouse

On Saturday 2 August 2008 at 14h00 the Friends of the Iziko Michaelis Collection will host a walkabout by the artist Andrew Putter to discuss his new video installation ‘Secretly I Will Love You More’ at the Old Town House Museum on Greenmarket Square.

Putter’s installation piece is a video recreation of a 17th century Dutch portrait painting and supposedly represents Maria de la Quellerie, wife of Jan van Riebeeck. In 1652 De la Quellerie adopted the Khoikhoi child Krotoa, and in this recreation, she is shown singing a gentle Nama lullaby to her daughter.

The work was the winner in the Video Installation category at Spier Contemporary 2007, and was recently acquired for the Iziko Art Collections. It is an excellent example of a contemporary South African artist using the Michaelis Collection as a base for a cutting edge, highly relevant work of art.

Tickets cost R20 and include light refreshments afterwards. Booking is not required and tickets will be sold at the door. Undercover parking is available at the Mandela Rhodes Place parking garage, c/o Burg and Wale St (fee charged).
