28/07/2008 Symposium: Dutch Museum partners with National Museum of Mali

An event not to be missed takes place at the TH Barry Lecture Theatre, Iziko South African Museum, on Wednesday 30 July from 12:45-14:15. Luminaries from the Rijks Museum voor Volkenkunde Leiden in Holland, Director Dr Steven Englesman, and Archaeologist and Conservator of its African Section, Dr Annette Schmidt, conduct a seminar entitled “The Inclusive Museums Experience of the Volkenkunde Museum Leiden and its partnership with the National Museum of Mali”.

With the opening of the long-awaited ‘Timbuktu Manuscripts’ exhibition at the Castle of Good Hope on Thursday 7 August, this promises to be a subject that this is both compelling and highly relevant.

Dr Engelsman and Dr Annette Schmidt are part of a Dutch delegation visiting Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg. They will visit a number of sites of political and cultural significance including all Iziko museum sites, District Six Museum, Robben Island Museum and the Stellenbosch Village Museum, and will meet with dignitaries from various government departments as well as senior management of Iziko Museums and Western Cape Museum Services.

For further information on the seminar, contact Wandile Kasibe at 021 481 3804/13 or e-mail wkasibe@iziko.org.za
