Events of the past
offer lessons for the present
One of the most fateful events which occurred in South African
history- the assassination of Prime Minister Dr. Hendrik Frensch
Verwoerd - becomes the topic of a public dialogue at the Iziko South
African Museum on Wednesday 13 August 2008 at 18h00.
Dr. Wilhelm Verwoerd, former researcher on the South African Truth
and Reconciliation Commission and Zuleiga Adams, scholar and
researcher at UWC, will focus on this momentous deed of 6 September
1966, as the point of departure for a discussion entitled
‘Uncovering history: engaging the past in order to live better in
the present’. Dr Verwoerd, considered the major architect of
apartheid, was stabbed to death by court messenger Dimitrio
Tsafendas during a parliamentary sitting.
Through this dialogue, Iziko Museums hope to contribute towards the
country’s collective memory, social cohesion, nation building and,
ultimately, reconciliation.
Entry to the event is free.
