26/08/2008 Last chance to view ‘Pancho Guedes: An Alternative Modernist’

The public will have a last opportunity to view the works of architect Pancho Guedes, on show at the Iziko South African National Gallery until Sunday 31 August. ‘Pancho Guedes: An Alternative Modernist’ offers the viewer substantial insight into the work and mindset of this innovative craftsman. From an African perspective, he was probably one of the most avant-garde, if not daring, of his time.

Commissioned and produced by the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel, and curated by Pedro Gadanho, the exhibition focuses on Guedes’ works over the 25-year period he spent in Mozambique. During this time, described as his most creative, he seamlessly brought together Europe and Africa, art and architecture, dream and reality.

Born in Portugal in 1925, Guedes, who was seven years old when his family came to Africa, was an ardent promoter and supporter of vernacular architecture as well as African artists.

The Gallery is open daily from 10:00-17:00, except Mondays. Enquiries: 021 467 4660.
