22/09/2008 Baroque Art and Architecture Lecture series

The well-known art and architectural historian Dr Hans Fransen will present a series of five illustrated lectures on The World of Baroque. The series is hosted by the Friends of the Iziko Michaelis Collection at the Old Town House on Greenmarket Square.

The series is the product of study trips undertaken by Dr Fransen through Europe and Latin America, concentrating on documenting expressions of the Baroque style in art, architecture and applied art. He also traced Baroque influences in the Dutch settlement at the Cape of Good Hope. The series is a slightly adapted repeat of the one given several years ago to great acclaim.

The first lecture “The Art of Persuasion” will be on Saturday 4 October at 14h30. The lectures thereafter will be on 18 Oct (Classical and Protestant Baroque), 1 Nov (Rococo in Central Europe), 15 Nov (Transmutation: Iberia and Latin America) and 29 Nov (Is there Baroque at the Cape?). All lectures start at 14h30.

Cost per lecture: Members R50, visitors R60, students R40. Price includes light refreshments. Discount of one lecture free if booked ahead for full series.
