20/01/2009 Partial Solar Eclipse on Monday: View it and discover more at Iziko Planetarium

On Monday morning 26 January, Cape Town will experience a partial eclipse of the sun.

Manager of the Iziko Planetarium, Theo Ferreira, has invited those working and living in and around the City Bowl, to join them outside the Iziko South African Museum’s main entrance, between 07:00-09:37, to watch this intriguing phenomenon. Once the stuff of superstition, eclipses are understood today as regular astronomical occurrences.

‘This is a partial eclipse of the sun with maximum eclipse at 08:15, as seen from Cape Town, covering about ¾ of the sun's diameter,’ says Mr Ferreira.

Planetarium staff will be available to answer questions, and should there be sufficient demand, there will be 10 minute Planetarium shows explaining the phenomena.

Please note that an eclipse should never be viewed with the naked eye as this could cause permanent damage to eyesight.
