13/03/2009 'What we see' walkabouts

Watching the cast-making through the window of the police station at Keetmanshoop in 1931. (Lichtenecker Collection, Namibian Scientific Society, Windhoek.)The exhibition, ‘What we see', opened at the Iziko Slave Lodge on 26 February 2009. It criticises racial stereotyping by interrogating the distorted ‘scientifically’ generated images of Namibia’s indigenous people. The exhibition engages with culturally generated images or ways of seeing in the way of juxtaposing a case-history of the production of images of “natives”, their voiced and recorded reactions to this, and contemporary South African artworks that reflect on ways of looking at and representing people.

This compelling and thought-provoking exhibition runs until the end of May 2009. Walkabouts, led by curator Anette Hoffmann will take place at the following times and are well worth attending:

  • Saturday 4 April: 10am
  • Saturday 18 April: 10am
