The Everyday and the Extraordinary. Three decades of architectural design by Jo Noero.Iziko South African National Gallery - 9th September to 30th November 2009
"Architecture is first and foremost a social art that is shaped by people and society,"
Everyday and the Extraordinary celebrates the architectural career of maverick Professor Jo Noero. An internationally renowned figure in the world of architecture, Noero is principally known for stunning projects such as The Red Location Museum of Struggle in Port Elizabeth, the Soweto Careers Centre and the Duduza Resource Centre. The exhibition is organised around three decades of practice from the 1980s, 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century. Each decade is defined by the social and political context of that time. The 1980s was a period of uncertainty and upheaval, the 1990s a period of transition and the first decade of the 21st century - a period of transformation. Noero’s designs and buildings represent the issues that relate to each decade – in its deepest sense Noero’s work is a mirror of our times. The show will encompass original drawings, physical models, text and images, and will be accompanied by a lavish catalogue.
The exhibition The Everyday and the Extraordinary-Three decades of design by Jo Noero is generously sponsored by Iziko Museums of Cape Town, the University of Cape Town and Cement and Concrete Institute.
This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Bishop David Nkwe, an inspiration – he was also Jo Noero’s friend and first client.
