2010: Making Connections
During this winter holidays Iziko Museums of Cape Town’s
Education and Public Programmes Department is offering a range
of Let’s Celebrate holiday programmes in celebration of our
rich heritage and our country’s momentous hosting of the FIFA
World Cup. Special programmes in the fields of Arts and
Culture, Natural History and Social History are taking place
at schools in areas such as Nyanga, Parkwood, Paarl, Hawston,
Stanford, and at certain Iziko Museums.
This holiday programme commenced with the opening of the
Let’s Celebrate children’s exhibition, which showcases the
work of learners and the Peace Jam youth group. This work is
currently exhibited at the Iziko SA National Gallery Annex.
Also at the Annex during the holiday period; the Ayoba
programme is presented in collaboration with the Lalela
Project – a global exchange of ideas, art and music that
empowers children affected by extreme poverty. Schools and
some children’s homes will participate in this programme.
The Social History component forms an integral part of the
programme, focusing on activities linked to cultural
practices, while Natural History will conduct evolution and
taxidermy sessions with learners and teachers. The Iziko
Planetarium will also be offering shows as well as
Starviewer astronomy workshops.
This year’s youth month celebrations, which took place at the
Iziko Slave Lodge and Robben Island, mark the events of the
winter of June 1976. Through this youth programme we ask
how can we engage our youth to interpret freedom through
creative means, thereby adding value to their intellectual
development?
The programme culminates in the display of work done by
learners at Iziko Museum sites and participating schools.
