This was the busiest room of an 18th century Cape house. Besides cooking and baking a variety of other activities took place here, e.g. coffee roasting; soap, sausage, butter and candle making; as well as preserving and pickling. Above the oven is a smoking chamber. Most kitchenware was made of brass and copper.
