Celebrate our national marine heritage at Iziko Museums of South Africa (Iziko). This year, Iziko will host a week-long programme entitled, Discovering the Deep: Past, present and futureat the Iziko South African Museum (ISAM).
Iziko Museums of South Africa, in partnership with BirdLife South Africa, will exhibit photographs from the annual Oceans of Life Photographic Competition. The exhibition will be housed at the Iziko South African Museum (ISAM). Coinciding with National Marine Week in October, Oceans of Life showcases stunning photography of a wide array of marine biodiversity, including seabirds, cetaceans, fish, and more from around the world. The aim of the exhibition is to celebrate marine life and to raise awareness of marine conservation.
Iziko Museums of South Africa invites visitors to experience the first-ever national exhibition of etchings by revered Dutch artist, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 – 1669). Opening at the Iziko Old Town House on Thursday, 2 October 2014 (First Thursdays), patrons can enjoy free entry to the museum from
17h00 – 21h00. The exhibition marks the centenary of the Iziko Michaelis Collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings presented to the people of South Africa in 1914, and housed at the Old Town House

Iziko Museums of South Africa is hosting a World Design Capital Exhibition - Symbols of South African Cultures - in collaboration with the South African Post Office’s Philately Services. On display at the Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG), is a series of commemorative stamps depicting local cultural artefacts as captured by local photographer Hein Botha.

The inaugural Attractions 2014 conference was held on 4 and 5 June at Kirstenbosch. It is the first time that such a forum has been created with the aim to bring together everyone in the business of attracting, satisfying and retaining visitors. Iziko Museums of South Africa CEO, Ms Rooksana Omar attended the event and presented a paper.
Keeping with the Women's Day theme, Iziko’s Social History Collections and Education and Public Programmes (EPP) departments arranged a programme at the Iziko Slave Lodge with women from the communities of Silver City and Lost City in Mitchell’s Plain on Women’s Day 2014. The women belong to the women’s group Arisen Woman, an organisation that helps abused women struggling with day-to-day issues. Social History Educator, Nadjwa Damon was there to capture the day.

Iziko Museums of South Africa is hosting Patterns of Contact: Designs from the Indian Ocean World, with treasures drawn from Iziko’s permanent collections, as well as magnificent works from the collections of Groote Schuur and the South African Parliament. This exhibition reveals the links between our history, visual culture, art and design with the Indian Ocean territories’, and a remarkable 14th century Chinese map puts world history sharply in focus.
As part of the Show Rembrandt your Worldcampaign, a replicated self-portrait of renowned 17th-century Dutch artist, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1696) has arrived at Iziko Museums of South Africa. You’re invited to snap and post your selfie with the Rembrandt ‘selfie’ on the Iziko Facebook page using the hashtag ‘#myRembrandt’. On view at the Iziko Old Town House from 2 October 2014.
As part of Iziko’s commemoration of national Women’s Day 2014, and on the 60th anniversary of the Women’s Charter, an inter-generational get-together was held at the Iziko Old Town House on 9 August. Amid the storytelling, singing and dancing, women of all ages were offered a space to reflect on the history of women’s activism during apartheid and today. CATHSSETA Intern, Ondela Manjezi, based at the Iziko Education and Public Programmes department (EPP) reports on this moving occasion.
