Human Rights Day, a tribute to those who fought for the rights and equality of all South Africans, is commemorated annually on 21 March. On this day in 1960 (previously known as Sharpeville Day), police fired on unarmed protesters, killing 69 people, many of whom school children, who were shot in the back as they fled.
The first ever solo museum exhibition, on South African soil, of works by internationally acclaimed artist, El Anatsui recently opened at the Iziko South African National Gallery. In a career that spans over four decades Anatsui has created a vast body of work that has expanded the language of contemporary sculpture in Africa and the globe.
International Mother Language Day is celebrated annually on 21 February. Iziko Museums of South Africa, together with the One City, Many Cultures Project will be hosting a public symposium at the Iziko Slave Lodge on Saturday, 24 February 2018 from 10h30 until 13h00.

A unique multi-media exhibition at the Iziko Slave Lodge, Through Positive Eyes, puts cameras into the hands of people who are living with HIV/AIDS, encouraging them to document their daily lives. The project is co-directed by London-based South African photographer and AIDS activist Gideon Mendel, who has been chronicling HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa since 1993.

Anatsui’s much anticipated first solo museum show on South African soil, entitled Meyina, opens at the Iziko South African National Gallery on 17 February 2018.
2017 was a challenging but successful year for Iziko. Notably, Iziko received an unqualified report from the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) – an indication that the institution is well managed from governance, financial and performance perspectives.
