Reclaim, restore and celebrate our living heritage on 24 September, with free entrance to all Iziko Museums of South Africa (Iziko). Connect with family and friends for a fun-filled day of art, dance, discussions and performances. Iziko, in collaboration with the Company’s Garden Precinct Stakeholders group, will host the in_herit festival on 24 September.
The much-debated question “is fashion art?” came to mind when the Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG) was chosen as one of the iconic venues for the Cape Town Fashion Week this year.
Opening ‘Plato’s Cave’: The Legacy of Kevin Atkinson (1939-2007),is a landmark exhibition on show at the Iziko South African National Gallery, showcases the work of one of South Africa’s foremost but least understood abstract artists. This posthumous tribute to Atkinson, hosted by Iziko Museums of South Africa, is an acknowledgement of the impressive contribution that he made to South African art.
Iziko scientists Dr Wayne Florence (project supervisor), Mr Dylan Clarke and Ms Melissa Boonzaaier (Natural History Department) spent about two months at the Natural History Museum in London (NHMUK). From this (short) research visit, the staff members have gained improved knowledge of marine invertebrate taxonomy and collections management procedures, and hope that collaborative projects will open doors, create opportunities and unlock primary biodiversity data.

Visitors to the Iziko Maritime Centre at the popular V&A Waterfront are able to view a scale model of Cape Town Harbour and come to an appreciation of this man-made marvel. The scale model of the harbour was built in 1885 for the Indian and Colonial Exhibition held in London during 1886.

While shipping may be all but obsolete in a modern era of air travel, the nostalgia of seafaring is tangible in this port city that had its colonial origins as a refreshment station for ships on their way to and from the East.
