Education is one of the cornerstones of what we do at Iziko, and our Education and Public Programmes department supports education and life-long learning for visitors of all ages. At Iziko Museums of South Africa, we salute the boldness of youth, and acknowledge their will to embrace change. In honour of their role in shaping our country’s history, and in order to inspire a new generation of courageous, confident, and capable youth, Iziko offers *FREE ENTRY to all on 16 June. So, whether you’re young or young at heart, come and enjoy the legacy of youth at our museums on Youth Day!

In South Africa, Youth Day is commemorated annually on 16 June. On this day in 1976, black students opposed to the system of inferior ‘Bantu education’ began what started as a peaceful protest march. More than 20,000 learners took to the streets of Soweto to give voice to their objections and frustrations. Many youths were injured and lost their lives on the day and in the nation-wide rioting and revolt that followed. The bravery of these defiant young people is believed by many to have provided the impetus for accelerating the greater armed liberation struggle in South Africa.
