LEARN TO EARN STUDENTS EXHIBIT AT ISANG ANNEXE
Iziko Museums of South Africa’s Education and Public Programmes Department, in partnership with Learn to Earn (LtE) - a not for profit skills development organisation - will showcase the work of the Learn to Earn’s 2016 Graphic Design Students.
The works on display at the Iziko South African National Gallery at the Annexe are samples of the practical work completed and include photography, magazine layout and logo design.
The exhibition is open weekdays: Monday to Friday from 9am-4.30pm (closed Saturday and Sunday) and runs from the 17 until 25 November 2016. The Annexe, located next to the Iziko South African National Gallery, is an active learning, development and exploration space and platform for educational exhibitions as well as workshops for learners, educators and members of the public.
Learn to Earn is a not for profit organization working with unemployed people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their mission is to develop people, socially, economically, emotionally and spiritually. In addressing the legacy of apartheid, training interventions provided by Learn to Earn aim to be contextual, practical and market related.
Now in its ninth year, the Learn to Earn Graphic Design course has seen many of its graduates placed into tertiary education opportunities, realising the goal of bridging the gap left by poor schooling and lack of creative courses in many community high schools. This relationship between the community, academic partners and LtE is a good example of how inter-institutional collaboration can address educational problems in an innovative and ground-breaking manner.
At the time of implementation, this course was the only graphic design bridging course offered in a township setting using Apple computers and InDesign Software. "This course was a lifetime experience for me. I am glad I came to Learn to Earn and I appreciate what I have learnt" said Milani Gaven, 2016 Learn to Earn Graphic Design graduate.
"I have grown as a person and also understand what Graphic Design is now all about and I certainly want to continue with it." Thembelihle Pinzi, 2016 Learn to Earn Graphic Design graduate
The students of the class of 2016 have been exposed to the graphic design industry through their ongoing work with the Ofyt Advertising Agency. Through this collaboration students have been involved in logo and poster designs for The Feel Good Store. They also worked on a literacy project with The Uyavula Reading and Writing Project, an organisation that promotes reading amongst school children.
Five of the eleven 2016 students have applied to study further with Friends of Design, five have applied to Ruth Prowse School of Art and one student has applied at the Red & Yellow School. Three students have already been accepted at Friends of Design.
