Womens Day 2013

The Young Women's Empowerment event, with the theme "No Violence Against Young Women and Girls" will be hosted in collaboration between Iziko Museums of South Africa, CHUMA, GCIS (Government Communications & Information Systems), women in business and WritersHand Studios. With its overall campaign "Don't Hate Me Cause I'm Beautiful" the event is aimed at addressing social issues facing young women and girls in South Africa. The event will take place from 10h30 – 15h30 on Saturday, 10 August 2013 at the Whale Well, Iziko South African Museum, 25 Queen Victoria Street Cape Town.  

Under the theme: “No Violence Against Young Women and Girls” to address current issues faced by young women in South Africa. This programme is built on the success of the 2011 women’s day event that was organized between the above mentioned institutions.

The “Don’t Hate Me Cause I’m Beautiful” campaign was aimed at meeting the economic development needs and addressing social issues of teenage girls from previously disadvantaged communities. This year our “Don’t Hate Me Cause I’m Beautiful” Campaign will focus on the plight on young women who face hardship due to abuse, rape and other atrocities.

Our guest speakers for this year’s event include Ms. Lizelle Africa Senior Public Prosecutor SOCA Unit, National Prosecuting Authority, Western Cape and Ms Vanessa Lynch Founder of DNA Projects:Forensic Science. Project 021 an NPO and dynamic community arts and drama team will present a real life dramatisation as to how rape affects both the community and the victim itself. Project 021 was established to develop and promote Arts and Culture in public schools.

Presentations on how the National Prosecuting Office (NPA) works to combat these violent crimes against women and girls, followed by the DNA Projects: Forensic Science will giving insight as to what happens at the crime scene and the DNA kits which are utilized in these cases.

In addition there will be sponsored Goodie Bags for each learner and a prize give-aways on the day with a cosmetic, Matric Makeover from Blush by JKolbee for one lucky Grade 12 pupil.
