Material from the Bokkeveld Group includes bivalves, brachiopods,
crynoids and trilobites, with a few sponges and bryozoans.
A small but important collection of
palaeoniscud and acanthodian fishes from the Witteberg Group.
Approximately 6200 vertebrates, mainly synapsid reptiles, have been
collected from the main Karoo Basin over the past 150 years. There are
400 vertebrate specimens and good study collections of Dinocephalia,
Dicynodontia, Gorgonopsia, Prosauropoda and
Captorhinida. Recent acquisitions include a 'nest' of Youngina,
and complete articulated skeletons of Pristeragnathus,
Diictodon, Pareiasaurus and Rhachiocephalus.

Trace Fossil Collection
There are some 300 trace fossils, which are mainly arthropod
trackways from the Lower Ecca varved shales (Early Permian). There are
also vertebrate tracks from the Beaufort Group (Late Permian).
The Baxter-Brown Fossil Plant Collection
Over 1300 plant fossils consist mostly of the ‘Baxter-Brown’
collection of Early Triassic material from the Molteno Formation.
Several type specimens are included. |
