World shark
authority retires from Iziko... and heads for next port of call

International authority on shark taxonomy and Curator of Fishes in
the Natural History Collections Department,
Dr Leonard J V Compagno, retires from Iziko Museums at the end of
December, just months after receiving the prestigious Gilchrist
Medal for lifetime achievement in marine biological research.

Iziko’s Summer School programme

There’s plenty of listening, learning and looking to do at
Iziko’s upcoming
Summer School
programme which runs during February-March 2009. The packed
programme includes a discussion on the role of museums (official
opening), films on the theme of soccer, an illuminating lecture on
the creator of the iconic Drum magazine, William Bloke Modisane, a
symposium on the role of art, photography and the performing arts as
a means of expression today, a dialogue on climate change and global
crisis, talks on indigenous astronomy in southern Africa and a
discussion on our cosmic origin and heritage.

Iziko puts on its finest for summer

Iziko Museums has lined up a sizzling summer programme. Visitors
to the different sites will be treated to a host of exhibitions,
from Rock Art of the San to works by the acclaimed William
Kentridge, and from the Old Dutch Masters to the world’s latest and
most spectacular award-winning wildlife photographs.

Iziko hosts prestigious
wildlife photographic competition

This summer, Iziko
Museums will once again host the spectacular Wildlife Photographer
of the Year Exhibition at the Iziko South African Museum. Running
from 12 December until 15 March 2009, and brought directly from
London’s Natural History Museum by NHU AFRICA, the exhibition drew
record crowds during its run at Iziko last year.
