Built at a fraction of the normal cost – using a 91-segment mirror and
an ingenious mobile 'tracker' – the Southern African Large Telescope
has the largest aperture of any telescope in the world. Situated in
the heart of the Karoo, from where the San people first developed
their rich astronomical heritage, this telescope can see galaxies so
distant that their light has taken many billions of years to reach us.
It opens a new era for South African astronomy, and a new window on
the cosmos.
