H. Alken

TITLE: Changing Horses
DIMENSIONS: 870 x 1120 mm
FRAME: Wooden, gesso moulded, gilded gold
TREATMENT: November – December 2009

CONDITION
The frame in which the painting has hung for many years was beginning to show signs of age. Although generally the overall condition is fair, it did need some cosmetic and structural work doing. Labels adhered to the back add to the provenance of the frame.

TREATMENT CARRIED OUT

  • After the initial assessment and photography, the frame was cleaned.
  • Casts were made of existing corner mouldings, new mouldings were made, filled, fitted and adhered. And smaller losses were filled and textured.
  • Water colours and gold was used to match the existing surface finish on the new pieces.
  • The painting was then surface cleaned and buffered. And the dirt was removed from between the canvas and the stretcher bar and the back was dusted.
  • The painting was re-fitted in the frame using flexible brass plates.
