TITLE: The Melton Hunt
DIMENSIONS: 630 x 1520 mm
FRAME: Wooden, gesso moulded, gilded gold
TREATMENT: November – December 2009

CONDITION
The frame is gilded, constructed of moulded composition on wood. A long inscription is seen along the bottom. Regrettably two of the corner decorations are missing and the gilding is dirty. Labels seen on the back of the work, add to the provenance of the frame.

TREATMENT CARRIED OUT

  • Photographic record was taken and this was maintained throughout treatment.
  • Tests were carried out to remove the surface dirt and this was removed using the appropriately selected reagent.
  • Casts were made of existing corner mouldings, new mouldings were made, filled, fitted and adhered.
  • Smaller losses were filled and textured.
  • Water colours and gold leaf was used to match the existing gold on the new pieces.
  • The painting was surface cleaned and buffered.
  • The dirt was removed from between the canvas and the stretcher bar and the back was dusted.
  • The painting was re-fitted in the frame using flexible brass plates.
