TITLE: In the Widmerpool Country
DIMENSIONS: 630 x 1515 mm
FRAME: Wooden, gesso moulded, gilded gold
TREATMENT: November 2009 – January 2010

CONDITION REPORT
The frame is gilded, constructed of moulded composition on wood. Regrettably all four of the corner decoration is missing and a layer of surface dirt is present.

TREATMENT CARRIED OUT

  • Photographic record was taken and this was maintained throughout treatment.
  • Tests were carried out to remove the surface dirt and this was removed using the appropriately selected reagent.
  • Casts were made of existing corner mouldings, new mouldings were made, filled, fitted and adhered.
  • Water colours were used to match the existing gold on the new pieces.
  • The painting was surface cleaned and buffered. The dirt was removed from between the canvas and the stretcher bar and the back was dusted.
  • The painting was re-fitted in the frame using flexible brass plates.
