Girl at Her Dressing Table
1988 fibreglass and mixed media 140.8 x 120.8 x 99.5 cm
Collection: South African National Gallery
Girl at her Dressing Table represents an experience with which most women can identify - that of looking in the mirror and realising that the ideal images of femininity presented by the mass media do not square with their own less than ideal selves. The problem is that femininity, in the sense of being a collection of imposed limitations, fails as a reliable goal for women.
With this work Krams takes on the heritage of the representation of female sexuality and exposes the artifice of idealised images by giving us a 'warts
and all' experience of reality. In the process she questions and undermines the glamorous reification of the female body in the Old Master/Playboy tradition. (For further reading see Bedford, E. 1992. Contesting Stereotypes of Femininity
