A Positive Response to HIV

1 December - 24 March 2002

POSITIVE LIVES is a unique and growing collection of photographs that focus on the human stories of those at the heart of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It opened at the South African National Gallery on International AIDS Day. The images and text present the personal experiences of different people, reflecting the issues and emotions that confront them in living and working with HIV/AIDS. By sharing their stories, we can all face the challenges, myths and prejudices, which surround HIV/AIDS. Since the exhibition was seen at the Sang in 1995, POSITIVE LIVES has travelled extensively throughout India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Europe, the USA and Australia and the exhibition has changed significantly with new stories and photographs having been added to the exhibition with each new country it toured. There will be new work reflecting local experiences from the Cape Town region.

POSITIVE LIVES is a unique collaboration between the Terrence Higgins Trust and Network Photographers. The project is made possible by the dedication of the volunteers of POSITIVE LIVES in the United Kingdom and continued support from the Levi Strauss Foundation. It tours with the support of various organisations, including Glaxo Wellcome, AIDS Trust of Australia, Elton John AIDS Foundation, British Council, Roche Products and Drik Gallery.

2001 will also see the start of a tour to nine regions of Mozambique. Additional stories from Mozambique will form a central part of this exhibition. Organisers hope to extend the tour of the Positive Lives gallery show to other cities in Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Zimbabwe and South Africa, along with their outreach programmes.
