Rock art painting, Linton panel, Maclear District, Eastern Cape

This famous panel comes from a tradition that may date back more than 27 thousand years. San rock art generally depicts symbols of supernatural power and the religious experiences of shamans. The San are regarded as descendants of the most ancient inhabitants of South Africa, and one of the figures from this panel was incorporated in the current South African coat of arms, in an attitude of greeting that is considered to symbolize a sense of national unity.
