Snuff-box, Eastern Cape

Snuff-box, Eastern Cape

It is made of a compound of hide scrapings, blood and clay that is moulded over a clay form, which is removed after drying to leave a cavity that is suitable for containing snuff. Although snuff-boxes were small intimate objects, worn on the person and reflecting the status of the owner, snuff was for sharing and created an important activity that sustained social relationships. The small metal snuff-spoon is for carrying snuff to the nose, and the snuff-box has a cord for attachment to a cloak or bag.
