This serene face, carved in wood, is from the north-west coast of
Canada having been collected at Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island by
Captain James Cook (1728-79) on his last voyage (1776-79).
Stylistically similar to other masks from this area, it nonetheless
appears to be unique in the expression the carver has given it. It is
thought to have been used during the ceremonies held in the winter
season. Presented to the Cape Governor, Joachim von Plettenberg, in 1780.
