Bowl, Longquan or Southern Celadon ware bowl, Song dynasty (960-1279)

Bowl, Longquan or Southern Celadon ware bowl, Song dynasty (960-1279)

The bowl is undecorated with its rim bound in metal. The name Longquan refers to a town in southern China, an important market centre for this type of ware. The body of Longquan ware varies from a stoneware to a porcellaneous ware. The glaze is opaque and has a grey-green or grey-blue colour. The colour is derived from the small amount of iron oxide present in the glaze which was fired in an oxygen-reduced atmosphere. The texture and colour of the glaze have a sensuous appeal, believed to be an attempt to produce a glaze that resembled jade in both colour and texture.
