Vase, porcelain decorated in famille rose enamels, Chinese, 1736-1795 (Qianlong period)

Hand painted with peach, peony and prunus designs. Peaches, according to Chinese belief, symbolise longevity. A great deal of porcelain was produced in China for the foreign market, much of it blue and white, but brightly coloured enamelware like this one was also popular. VOC ships returned to Holland laden with porcelain for Europe, though a little found its way into Cape homes. This is an outstanding example of famille rose ware.
