Coarsely-woven Venda blanket or cloak found in a cave at the
confluence of the Luvuvhu and Mutale Rivers, where it had been hidden
at the time of the Venda-Swazi war. In northern Limpopo wild cotton
was collected, spun by hand into thread, and woven into cloth by men
using ground looms. The cloth was used for loin-cloths, wraps and
cloaks, as well as for currency and for tribute. The importation of
European fabrics and clothing had almost completely displaced
locally-made cloth by the mid-20th century.
