Figure of a missionary carved on the upper end of an ornamental stick
from Barotseland. African wood-carvers often made images of European
colonists and officials with their insignia of authority, capturing
their likenesses with both humour and sensitivity to the material
symbols of status. This was a way of coming to terms with cultural
intrusion and of attempting to harness some of the power manifested by
