Dogon lock for a granary door, carved in a stylized human form. Locks
that were attached to doors were generally carved in a variety of
forms related to Dogon creation mythology and were known as ta koguru,
while those attached to door posts were not usually sculpted and were
known as dur kunu. The locking mechanism consisted of metal prongs
suspended in the vertical beam that fell into holes in the horizontal
beam when the lock was closed. The key had a matching set of prongs to
push the dangling prongs up and open the lock.
Collected by Mr M de Combes and presented by the Friends of the S A Museum in 1988.
