Stone, bored, Great Zimbabwe, Masvingo, Zimbabwe, 13th to 15th
centuries.
An enigmatic cylindrical soapstone bored stone found in 1889 by the
travellers A. and W. Posselt in the Eastern Enclosure at the Great
Zimbabwe ruins. The carved bumps and concentric rings on it allude to
a crocodile in its pool, suggesting that it may have been used in
rain-making ceremonies.
Presented by the British South Africa Company in 1893.
