Snuff-box, gourd, KwaZulu-Natal,
mid 19th century
A snuff-box decorated with an engraved scene of
Cape Town, showing public buildings, wagons, a carriage with driver
and groom, soldiers and cavalry on parade, and a hunting scene. It is
said to have made by a Zulu craftsman who had visited Cape Town and
wished to give his chief, Dingaan, an idea of the European settlement
there.
