Enamel dial inscribed Dubuc L’ne á Paris, in a drum case surmounted by
an allegorical figure for Africa in a seated position beside a
tropical tree, her foot on a crocodile, on an arched base supported by
four furry paws on a rectangular base. A female seated on a crocodile is a typical motif associated with
Africa. This recalls an allegorical figure for Africa by the Antwerp
artist Martin de Vos (1536-1603). It occurs on maps of Africa by N J
Visscher, F de Wit and other Dutch cartographers of the 17th and 18th
centuries. Dr W F Purcell Collection. (SACHM86/255)
