Armchair, unidentified wood, Dutch or English, late 17th century

Tall rectangular armchair with caned back and seat, carved openwork below bottom rail, consisting of acanthus leaves, flower buds and scrolls. Arms dipped and ending in downward scrolls, decorated with carved acanthus leaves, flower buds and open flowers. The front of the seat frame is carved with gaugework. The legs are baluster-turned, sectioned by blocks. Spirally turned box stretcher, bun feet.

Reputed to have been the property of Governor P G Noodt who held this post at the Cape from 1727 until his death in 1729.
