Armchair, East Indian ebony, Jakarta in Indonesia (Batavia), late 17th century

Rectangular design, broad proportions. All-round floral carving, open back, originally having nine turned spindles between two wide back rails, headed by a broad crest rail; the square the square back posts surmounted by lotus finials. Dipped arms ending in scrolls resting on turned arm rests. Original caned seat replaced by planked seat. Twist-turned legs, connected by broad box stretchers, ball feet.

This chair is the finest example of the colonial furniture maker’s art in the furniture collection of Social History. It is also the only one which can be pinpointed to a particular area in the East, viz. Jakarta.
