Toy, wire, tin, pine cone, and silver and red paint, by Sandisile Matya, a 16-year-old Xhosa boy, Cradock, Eastern Cape, 1988.

Model of a wind-pump. Well-designed toys constructed from tin cans, wire and other scrap materials are to be seen everywhere in the townships and rural areas of South Africa. In communities subject to poverty and stress, these creative playthings are not only fun to play with, but are also, as their popularity has spread beyond their areas of origin, a source of income to their teenage makers.

Purchased through Mrs D Bishop.
