Figurines, geese, walrus ivory, Alaska, c. 1940

Figurines, geese, walrus ivory, Alaska, c. 1940

Made by an Inuit carver. The Inuit inhabit the northern regions of Canada and live in small, scattered communities and villages throughout the Arctic from Alaska to eastern Greenland. A tradition of carving ivory and wood goes back over 2 000 years and continues to the present day. Most men could carve but some became specialists, carving exquisite little figures that reflect the Arctic world around them.
