ANT[H]O[NY] HIPPON MAS[TER] OF THE
DRAGON 28 DECEMBER
AN[T]HONY H[IPPON] 1607 William Keeling’s fleet of 1607consisted of the
Dragon, Hector and
Consent with Anthony Hippon as the captain of the Dragon. On 17
December of the same year the Dragon, and Hector arrived in Table Bay.
The two ships left Table Bay on 1 January 1608 on their way to Socotra
in the East. During this visit to the cape, Hippon engraved an
inscription on a stone. In August 1608 the Hector sailed homeward
under the command of Hippon and arrived in Table Bay in January 1609
where a second inscription was engraved on the same stone used for
this purpose on his previous visit. The smaller unfinished inscription
was probably engraved during Hippon’s last visit in 1611 in the Globe
bound for the Coromandel Coast. Hippon died during the trip in Pattani
in Thailand. (SACHM6097)
