Vase, silver, attributed to Lawrence Twentyman, Cape, c. 1829

Trumpet-shaped and on pedestal foot. Two scroll handles with leaf decoration. Applied scroll and leaf border around top edge, centre and foot. Applied vine leaf, grape and tendril decoration on lower half. Inscription within laurel wreath – on obverse side: "Presented to John Fairbairn Esq., Editor of the South African Advertiser Newspaper by a number of inhabitants of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope. February, 1829." On the reverse: "In testimony of their sense of the able, consistent and independent manner in which that Journal has been conducted by him, and of their gratitude for his exertions in endeavouring to procure for the Colony the advantages of a Free Press."

On stand with four legs with leaf and scroll decoration and paw feet, linked by stretchers with shell and leaf decoration. In wooden case.
