Each of the three libraries in Iziko Museums has a distinctive
collection and character and serves the research needs and
educational mission of the Institution.
As one of the three, the social history library focuses on
the social history of South Africa. Books and periodicals on the
following subjects can be found in the library: art, architecture,
archaeology, history focusing on Cape Town, ceramics, decorative
arts, furniture, fashion, glass, jewellery, textiles, philately
(stamps), and numismatics (coins).
Although this is not a public lending library (only Iziko Museums’
staff may borrow books), the public may make use of the library for
general reference and research, free of charge. A photocopier is also
available.
This library holds approximately 15 000 books, 120 journal titles,
videos, pamphlets, sales catalogues and CDs.
