I am What I am
This exhibition enters into conversation on the legalisation of sex workers; the history of the Slave Lodge as an unofficial “slave brothel”; and an insertion of outcasts and marginalised bodies into spaces of institutional memory. It is herstory in the making. The Lodge’s location as a site of memory, along with its geo-political history, make it central to the lived experiences of sex workers in Cape Town today. The processes of curating and exhibiting this work are firmly rooted in the agency of the sex workers, who are both the craftspeople and the subjects of the work itself. This multi-disciplinary collection – photography, video, and writing – is a collaboration with photographer Irene Grobbelaar- Lenoble, and the Feminist Collective at the Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT).
