Iziko Museums of South Africa is proud to present the first retrospective exhibition of globally acclaimed South African artist, Sue Williamson. This exhibition brings together her most important works from over 50 years of making art and telling powerful stories.
The exhibition, There’s something I must tell you, will be held at the Iziko South African National Gallery. It will fill eight rooms and the central Atrium of the gallery. Over 100 artworks will be on display, showing more than 50 years of Sue Williamson’s creative journey. Visitors will see many different types of artworks, including drawings, embroidery, photography, videos, and large installations.
The exhibition also includes a new version of her artwork The Last Supper at Manley Villa. This work was first made in the early 1980s to show what was happening in District Six. For this new version, the same family that helped with the original work has once again lent their dining room chairs to be used in the display.
Even after apartheid ended, Sue Williamson continued to make artworks that ask important questions. She spoke out about issues like HIV/AIDS, colonialism, and xenophobia. Her work asks us to remember the past and think about the future.
Visitors will also see letters, notes, and personal objects from the artist’s studio. These help us understand her thoughts and the meaning behind her work.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the life and work of an artist who has helped shape South African art and history.
