The methods, materials and techniques used by artists are a constant source of interest to art historians and curators. Technical studies, often conducted through different lighting techniques reveal the choice, use and application of materials, attributing particular qualities to the artwork.
This exhibition focuses on paintings by South African artists from the Iziko South African National Gallery Permanent Collection which have undergone technical investigations, revealing compelling characteristics, which is on-going. Under the Light is a curatorial collaboration forming part of the Conservation Week programme with the 2016 Centre for Curating the Archive (CCA) Honours in Curatorship class at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
