Beat the heat with Iziko Museums this summer!

12/01/2018
Natural History at the Iziko South African Museum

We’re midway through January, and if you are looking for an ideal family outing that stretches your budget – especially at this time of year – look no further! Encounter, discover, explore… art, nature, people and more! #BeatTheHeat. Adults and accompanying children enter Iziko’s cool museums at *half price during local school holidays!

Explorers of all ages are invited to see the wonders of South Africa and Africa’s natural history at the Iziko South African Museum. Be amazed by rock art dating back millions of years, and discover how Africa’s ancient civilisations were able to survive. Take a pre-historic journey with our African Dinosaurs and encounter the gigantic great-great-grandfather of all ‘crocs’! Take a walk on the wild side with the Nature’s Best Photography Africa exhibition, a showcase of the most exquisite photography from across the continent!

The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome offers visitors of all ages an experience unlike any other available on the continent! Take a virtual ride in our immersive digital full-dome theatre. Shows available Tuesday through Sunday, and Wednesday evenings.

Six amazing exhibitions are on display at the Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG), each offering something unique for all art enthusiasts! Hidden Treasures presents works from the Gallery’s permanent collection – some never seen before! The ancient art of abstraction is explored in Assessing Abstraction; while Painted Surfaces brings to light the artist’s process of famous South African paintings. Derek Bauer’s Alternative Press exhibits fiercely independent and challenging views of the then apartheid government. The black and white photographic exhibition, Footprints is a culmination of 25 years of work by Andrew Tshabangu. Standard Bank Young Artist 2017, Beth Armstong’s in perpetuum takes sculpture to new heights.

Recollect the origins of our roots at the Iziko Slave Lodge and discover the story behind local surnames in My Naam is Februarie. Delve into stories at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum where the narratives of Cape Town’s slaves after their emancipation are told.

For a journey of discovery this summer, make Iziko museums part of your plans!
